So you just got a new bicycle, have ridden a couple times, maybe joined a riding group or 2. Now what? BASC welcomes new riders and experienced riders by providing different routes and distances that cater to all levels.
Both days offer unique challenges and distances, but with rest stops along the way, any rider can be fit enough for Bicycle Across South Carolina.
The Right Bicycle
The first and most important thing about BASC if you’re a new rider is to have the right bicycle. The 2-day ride is almost all gravel so we’d recommended using a hybrid or gravel bicycle. These bicycles can handle the uneven terrain and help make your ride easier during the long distance. For more information, check out our other blog post; “What Type of Bicycle is Right for BASC?”
The hybrid bicycle will be suitable if you’re thinking about trying the 3-day ride, but be aware there are some steeper hills, rocky terrain and fast inclines.
If you’re still not sure if BASC is right for you, check out the recommended qualifications below (based off of the 2-day ride).
- Can you ride 60+ miles on (relatively) flat terrain?
- Are you able to pack gear, plan, and take care of your body (hydrate, rest, etc.) for a 60 mile+ ride? Note: There will be rest stops along the way
- Do you have a hybrid, mountain or gravel bicycle (we highly recommend not using a street bicycle)?
If you feel confident in all of these recommendations, then you’re good to go!
If you’re unsure, shoot us an email here and we can help you decide if this ride is right for you.
Also, don’t forget we have a non-rider option if you’d like to just tag along with friends and enjoy the experience on your own two feet.
And don’t forget, BASC isn’t until September so you’ll have plenty of time to train! Keep an eye out for our training guide coming soon.

As the event continues to evolve and come to life over the next few months, we want to hear what you’d like to see at BASC. Post-ride yoga? Football on a big screen? Email me here and we’ll see what we can do!
Early Bird Pricing is available until August 1st ($270 for the 2-day ride and $370 for the 3-day ride).
