THIS IS A GRAVEL / OFF-ROAD RIDE. Participants can expect 3 days of moderately challenging terrain. The dirt/gravel roads are well maintained by the US Forest Service. Each day will bring hills, gravel, and paved roads. You should expect a ratio of 50% paved and 50% gravel roads each day. The ride is set up for mountain, cross, gravel, and crossover bikes with wider, knobby tires. Road bikes are not recommended.
Participants can expect 3 days of moderately challenging terrain. The dirt/gravel roads are well maintained by the US Forest Service. Each day will bring hills, gravel, and paved roads. You should expect a ratio of 50 % paved and 50% gravel roads each day.
Given the terrain type and BASC being a gravel ride experience; mountain, gravel and cyclocross bicycles are strongly recommended. Bicycles that have wider, knobby-type tires will roll over the gravel/dirt roads with greater ease.
E-Bikes are welcome – please follow the recommendations above regarding bike types.
Please do not plan on riding a triathlon, beach cruiser, road or any bicycle with skinny tires and no tread. We also do not recommend single speed bicycles, but rather bikes with gears
Recommend Tires: We suggest tires with some sort of traction and/or wider, knobby tires.
Recommend Bicycle: The ride is set up for mountain, cross, gravel, and crossover bikes with wider, knobby tires. We also recommend paying attention to the weather leading up to the event. Based on road conditions, especially the ones we are using which are mostly dirt and gravel, this can affect which bike would be most appropriate.

Yes! This year we are partnering with Rocket Revolution to offer a five week training program specific for Bicycle Across South Carolina (BASC)! Each week focuses on a different pillar essential to riding a successful BASC: endurance training, nutrition and hydration, tires, and other topics. As a seasoned racer, coach Andrew will have plenty of tips to elevate your BASC experience whether you're a seasoned BASC veteran or new to gravel! Even more exciting than learning new tips, the virtual community experience allows you to meet fellow BASC riders even before the event in October! Sign up today to meet fellow cyclists and learn how to improve your cycling experience!
Yes, you can use either of these because it is a ride and not a race. Please note that you will be responsible for charging your bike each night.
BASC Basecamp:
The South Carolina Governor's School for Agriculture at John de la Howe (JDLH) is a state-funded, public, residential high school focused on providing a unique and challenging agricultural education program. Our school, the first statewide program of its kind in the nation, will allow students to receive hands-on training in the fields of agriculture, agribusiness, forestry, land management, food science, and more - all aimed at assessing the needs of modern farms.
John de la Howe School is the oldest educational institution in South Carolina below the college level. I was established in 1797 through the will of Dr. John de la Howe, a French Physician who immigrated to Charleston in 1764. JDLH became an agency of the state of South Carolina in 1918.
Camping: Campsites are included with your registration. They will be offered up on a first come first serve basis but there are plenty of great spots at our Basecamp!
RV / Camper: There are limited RV / Camper spots available. Please note, there will be no water or electric hookups so it will be "boondocking" style only! Please make sure to let us know what size vehicle you will be bringing when you register (you will be prompted).
Hotels: Hotels are not included with your registration but we will have a group rate that you'll be able to take advantage of. The designated hotels will most likely be in Greenwood about 30 min away since they are the only hotels that are big enough to accommodate a group of our size. You're also welcome to book any Airbnbs, Bed and Breakfast or hotels that you find closer to McCormick.

The BASC Basecamp is where the ride will start and end each day. This year's Basecamp will be The South Carolina Governor's School for Agriculture at John de la Howe (JDLH), 192 Gettys Rd, McCormick, SC 29835.
Yes! The campsites will be primitive but shower trailers and restrooms will be available at our BASC Basecamp for riders.
We will be able to accommodate RVs and Campers at our campsite. Please note, there will be no water or electric hookups so it will be "boondocking" style only! Please make sure to let us know what size vehicle you will be bringing when you register (you will be prompted).
While BASC is here to support you before, during, and after your ride each day, we do suggest that you come prepared with the necessary gear and bike supplies to suit you and work best for your bicycle. Anyone wishing to spend the weekend with you camping and using BASC event services (nightly activates, food and beverages, entertainment, showers, socials, etc.) MUST be registered as a Non-Rider. This is a discounted fee that includes all the benefits of a full registration minus access to the routes. We also encourage all Non-Riders to help assist BASC by volunteering.
Non-Riders are welcome to join in nightly festivities but will be on their own while riders are out on the trail.

We also have non-rider options where children are welcome to tag along for the camping, nightly activities, and adventure! Please visit our registration site to book a non-rider.
