Safety on the Trail
Welcome to Bicycle Across South Carolina, where the foundations of our ride are based on 4 pillars that we thought best encapsulated the BASC. When planning our 2019 ride our team decided that our ride most heavily leaned into the realms of Community, The Experience, The Adventure, and The Ride. Fast-forward to today, and taking into account all of the unexpected twists and turns of 2020, we thought it best to add a fifth pillar to BASC; Saftey.
Just like you, we want BASC to remain an event where like-minded individuals can gather and bond over a mutual affection for cycling, while also adhering to the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations given to us by professionals. As the situation unfolds daily, we continue to have conversations with our towns & communities, riders, business partners, vendors, and leadership team to determine the best course of action for everyone involved. Additionally, we are monitoring the discussions on our forums, blog posts, and social platforms and want you to know we are listening to your feedback. BASC takes months of planning and preparation to execute a safe and successful ride. We plan to make a decision that is in the best interest of our riders, towns & communities, and residents of South Carolina.
Now, you probably have some questions. We’ll try and answer as many as we can!
Q: What are you doing to prepare for a safe event?
A: We have budgeted for various materials that will be used to create a safer and more clean environment. This includes but is not limited to:
- Hand Sanitizer
- Disposable Gloves
- Makes or Facial Coverings
- Disinfectant Wipes
- All-Purpose Cleaner
- Paper Towels
- Disinfectant Spray
- Touchless Thermometer
- Bleach
Q: What changes and precautions are being put in place?
A: We will have protocols in place about monitoring and dealing with potential COVID-19 cases during the event.
- Sanitation stations will be set up at all venues, and rest stops.
- All BASC Staff will be versed in COVID-19 protocols and contingency plans
- All BASC staff will also be wearing masks or facials coverings wile in the venue or engaged with guests
- There will be staggered start times for riders to prevent and congestion around the starting line.
- Professional cleaning companies will be hired to clean all cabins per State Park protocols
- Strategic placement of tents and campsites to ensure appropriate and safe social distancing
- Strategic placement of food and beverage tents to avoid congregating in small areas.
- This year we will be utilizing predominately smaller tents instead of larger ones to prevent large crowds from forming
- Food and Drinks will be served by a staff member, there will be no buffet. Most items will be prepackaged or prepared.
- All vendors and caterers will be required our rules and standards per their contract
Q: What can Riders do to help their part?
A: If you are feeling unwell leading up to the event, please take the necessary precautions to make sure you are protecting yourself and others. In accordance with the CDC, please do not attend the event if you are showing any of the symptoms below;
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Nausea or Vomiting
Also…
We encourage riders to stay a safe distance of at least 6 feet apart, this includes both on and off-the-bike activities. BASC signage will be posted throughout the venues and trails as policy reminders. Additionally, Common areas such as dinner tents and campfires will have capacity limits for everyone’s protection. Face masks will be available for all riders upon check-in. We encourage all participants to wear a mask when inside the venue. All staff will be required to don a face covering when at venues and when interacting with guests. Riders can find handwashing and hand sanitization stations readily available at venues and rest stops to help prevent the spread of germs and maintain proper OCVID-19 hygiene. This will help ensure all riders and participants stay safe and healthy.
Temperature checks will be required of anyone participating in the event. This will be done via a no contact forehead scanner and will typically scan ~1 degree lower than an oral thermometer. Any rider with a temperature reading of 99.4 or above will not be able to participate in the ride. As a reminder:
- You should not eat, drink, or be physically active before or while taking the measurement
- Remove hats ten minutes before taking a reading
- Remove hair from forehead before taking a reading
- Oil and cosmetics can cause lower readings. Wait ten minutes after washing or cleaning the forehead before a reading.
Q: What about refunds?
A: If Bicycle Across South Carolina is canceled due COVID-19, riders will be fully refunded except for a $50.00 service fee.
Unfortunately, if a rider is feeling ill or unwell leading up to the event, we are unable to issue a refund if it falls within the no-refund period.

As you may have seen from our Instagram and Facebook, we officially have BASC 2020 dates! This year’s ride will take place on October 15th – 18th with 3, 2, and 1-day ride options.
