Meet Patty Reed!
Patty is from Greenville, SC and will be participating in her 4th BASC Ride this year!
Here’s what she has to say about BASC:
What initially drew you to participate in Bicycle Across South Carolina?
A rider friend introduced me to BASC
What are some of your favorite aspects of the event?
What I specifically LOVED about the Hickory Hill farm was the Dairy; the family was so welcoming. They offered hayrides, tours of the dairy and we met the baby cows. They brought us their delicious freshly made ice cream from their creamery and we shopped at their little country store. The space on their land that they offered for us for the event was scenic with beautiful rolling hills and there were plenty of flat spaces for camping too.
How would you describe the atmosphere and community among the riders during the event?
Never met a stranger at BASC camp; everyone is so friendly and helpful. If anyone needs something if someone close by can’t help, they probably know somebody who can.
What are some things you like about our Basecamp set-up?
Because there is a community space in the center of camp for concerts and meals everyone seems to enjoy gathering for “meet-n-greet”. There are games to play, Frisbees to throw, there were lots of vendors to partake in bike needs as well as sweet treats for sale! There was a masseuse by appointment, E-bikes to test drive, a bike repair vendor and lets not forget THE BIKE WASH GUY! The evenings are full of firepits, entertainment, adult beverages, snacks and lots of laughter sharing stories of the days ride.
Can you share a memorable moment or experience from one of the bike routes?
There was a mix of gravel and road, but you’re so far out in the country rarely was a motor vehicle seen, just SAG. One one of the routes there was a quaint little bridge over a stream; it was so lovely and peaceful. What a perfect spot to do a quick pull over for a Kodak moment.
How has participating in Bicycle Across South Carolina impacted you personally, whether in terms of fitness, friendships, or memorable experiences?
It’s certainly a staple on my annual calendar. I’ve made some real friends over the years and hope to continue to do so. It’s like a Homecoming every time. Renewing friendships and making new ones never gets old and staying fit is a mainstay in my life.
Would you recommend Bicycle Across South Carolina to others considering participating in similar events? If so, why?
I love to talk about BASC because I have pride in my home state and want everyone to see what I love and love it too. Cycling in South Carolina is my favorite thing to do!
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience or any advice you have for first-time participants?
Whether you’re a novice rider or a lifelong cyclist come prepared to have a great time. Everyone has a blast!
