Ride Green: Sustainable Practices for a Cleaner, Greener Event
By Ryan Biddix
Bicycle Across South Carolina is a phenomenal way to view the picturesque landscapes of the Palmetto State, all while promoting a healthy lifestyle. To make this event as “green” and conscious as possible, here are some sustainable practices you can use during your ride.
Dispose of Waste Appropriately
Always carry a small, portable trash bag to dispose of waste during your ride. Discard of trash at one of our available rest stops to leave the routes clean. If you want to go the extra mile, pick up any litter you see along the way!
Ditch the Plastic
Bring along a reusable water bottle for a well-hydrated journey. They’re handier than single-use plastic bottles and reduce plastic waste in the process. Every rest stop will have a refill station, so you’re all set for the ride ahead.
Choose Eco-Friendly Gear
Opt for cycling gear made of eco-friendly materials. Replace synthetic fabrics with natural ones such as cotton, linen, or even hemp. Try seeking out those that manufacture their products in sustainable manners and give complete product transparency. These materials tend to last longer when taken care of, thus minimizing the overall effect on our planet.
Take Public Transit or Carpool
If you’re coming from out of town to join this event, try carpooling with other riders or even using public transportation. Not only does this boost camaraderie, it also lessens your total carbon footprint!
Support Local Businesses
When looking for gifts or grub, try supporting local merchants and markets. In addition to finding truly unique treasures, shopping at local businesses has the added benefit of helping support the local economy as well as reducing the environmental impact of transporting goods across state lines.
Stay on Designated Paths/Trails
Stick to the marked bike paths and trails, to avoid environmental disruption. Respecting marked trails will help preserve the natural landscape keeping it as beautiful as before. This will guarantee that any future participants and tourists have just as great a time as those who have previously come.
Spread the Word
Encourage other riders to adopt sustainable practices. Share tips and tricks on our social media pages or during a group ride, to create a culture of sustainability within the cycling community.
By incorporating these simple yet effective practices, you can contribute to a cleaner environment and a greener BASC event. Let’s ride together, promote sustainability, and make a positive impact on our environment!
