Why Volunteer at BASC ’24?

By Ryan Biddix

Want to get the most out of BASC ’24? Then, consider signing up and volunteering at base camp this year! Volunteering at Bicycle Across South Carolina promises a fulfilling experience for all involved. This annual event, which brings cyclists from all over, is not just a celebration of cycling but also a demonstration of strong community spirit and support. If you’re new to the scene or a well-versed volunteer, each year offers new benefits and opportunities for personal growth and connection.

This year, we are offering shifts to help at our rest stops. If you volunteer for a day at a rest stop, you can receive a day of riding at BASC on us!

Giving Back at BASC

One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering at BASC is the chance to give back to your community. Bicycle Across South Carolina is a community-driven event, so it heavily relies on the dedication of our team members and volunteers. By giving your time and skills, you would play a crucial role in ensuring a safe, enjoyable adventure for all participants. Your involvement will contribute to the overall camaraderie and collective achievement, which in turn creates a positive impact on participants and volunteers alike.

Building Connections

Large-scale events like BASC bring in a diverse crowd of people to the outskirts of the picturesque Palmetto State. From event organizers, and cyclists, to other volunteers, there is a sea of people to make meaningful connections with! Whether it’s a personal or professional connection you’re looking for, these candid conversations can open new doors with boundless opportunities.

If you’d like to connect with other cyclists before event day approaches, engage with others on our social media platforms! Facebook and Instagram

Learning New Skills

Participating in the organization and execution of a major event like Bicycle Across South Carolina can be an invaluable learning experience. Volunteers can develop and hone various skills such as event coordination, communication, and construction. These skills can be transferable to every aspect of your life, whether personal or professional. Additionally, it will elevate your confidence and enhance your ability to tackle new challenges, quickly.

Enhancing Mental & Physical Well-being

Volunteering is not only rewarding but also extremely beneficial for one’s health. According to the Mayo Clinic, volunteering improves physical and mental by reducing stress, which increases dopamine and lowers blood pressure. Isn’t that neat? Changing lives gives you a longer one!

Engaging in physical tasks, interacting with others, and contributing to a cause you care for will inevitably boost your overall well-being. The sense of accomplishment that comes from being part of a successful event can provide a significant emotional lift. Furthermore, being active and involved within a niche community like BASC can lead to a more balanced, stress-free lifestyle.

Creating Memorable Experiences

The best part of this annual event is the experiences you gain and the memories you make along the scenic way. These tend to stay with you long after the event is over. Just ask our returning riders! Now in its sixth year, there’s been many memorable moments. One year at base camp, a goat wandered off (presumably to the dining tent). Fortunately, some riders skilled in animal herding managed to guide it to safety. Such moments have a way of lingering. Many more memories are yet to come!

Volunteering at BASC ’24 provides an unforgettable experience to connect deeper with your chosen community. From personal to professional development, this event will provide you with everything you’re looking for. If we’ve managed to convince you to join, email our Rider Relations Coordinator, Isabella at irocco@postandcourier.com to become a part of our dynamic and diverse team!
